Beach Cleanup on International Coastal Cleanup Day

There is pollution on the gold sands of Vizag. Sagar Nagar is a neighborhood located in the city of Visakhapatnam Coast of the Bay of Bengal and is one of the best and pleasant residential areas in the city.

When Satya Tenneti, Project Manager (Amzur), moved to Vizag, India, he began taking regular walks on the beach – and started picking up plastics along the way. He believed that he could educate people from all walks of life to help him clean up the beach.

“I’ve always been a sustainability-minded person,” Tenneti says. “As I started working at Amzur and witnessed the beginnings of Amzur Energy, I’ve become hyper-aware that globally we’re in the middle of an epidemic addiction to plastic.” In order to share a message of sustainability, he decided to rally the Amzur teams to make a commitment to sustainability and sponsored a beach cleanup in Vizag.

Amzur team was at Sagar Nagar on September 5th, 2019. Amzur Organizational and Social Development team drove a Vizag Beach Clean-Up initiative along with the Indian Youth for Society (IYFS). “This is our water, our beach, our environment,” Tenneti said.

By participating in cleaning beaches on International Coastal Cleanup Day, Amzur team members have redefined how we can each deploy our own coastal clean up. Vizag Sagar Nagar beach is a part of our treasured sanctuaries and economic engines. These beaches and surrounding water resources will help us earn a living and build a life.

“Will my child or grandchildren get to enjoy the same moments with the water that I grew up with?”says Nagendran Pulathota, Digital Marketing Manager at Amzur. He wonders if we are on the verge of losing some of what makes Vizag beaches so special.

“You are what you do, not what you say you’ll do.” – Carl Gustav Jung.

In 2019, we also initiated an awareness program in Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Public School with the message “Save Water & Avoid Plastic”.

Organizational and Social Development

For Vizag’s coastal areas such as Sagar Nagar, this is an all-hands-on-deck moment. If we work together, there’s a lot that we can do to tackle these problems. It’s going to require action on all levels from individual citizens such as Amzur team members to powerful policy makers in the city of Vizag. Some of the events and activities, both Tenneti and Pulathota are planning, leading, and promoting for the rest of 2019 and 2020 are:

  • Digital infrastructure at schools
  • Technical workshops
  • Awareness campaigns
  • Clean up drives
  • Tree plantation
  • Visiting orphanage, old-age homes

Would you like to partner up with Amzur and help us create digital infrastructures and/or pilot awareness sessions/programs on waste management at your school?
