Energy Communicator

The “Corner Stone” of building automation for decades has been occupied and unoccupied scheduling. For residential, occupied/unoccupied scheduling is at least, challenging.

With geolocation Smart phones, your Energy Communicator® (EC) home energy management system knows if you are leaving or going home and can automatically make energy management decision to maximize energy savings. As utilities upgrade information systems for Smart Grid, utilities can use home owners’ geolocation to improve grid performance. Homeowners allow the EC system to determine status and report this information to utilities as (1) going home or (2) going away, (3) away, or (4) home.

The Energy Communicator® hardware system consists of

  • Tridium’s Jace2 Supervisory Controller,
  • Vykon 34 IO direct digital controller,
  • 8 RIBs (Relays in a Box) from Functional Device,
  • Apple iPod Touch,
  • Current Transformers for electrical service panel and AC compressor

The Energy Communicator® (EC) software system consists of

    • Java-based framework software on the Supervisory Controller,

    • intelligent occupied/unoccupied scheduling based on
      objectives and geolocation
    • demand scheduling based on weather forecasting.

Just as optimal database searches spawned a whole industry of search engines, Energy Communicator and other similar home energy management systems can spawn a new industry on reduction of personal energy usage utilizing the GPS system used in our phones to know when we are leaving home and going away.
